Before & After: Media Room Gets a Modern-Glam Update

By Erinn Valencich

When a well-known TV producer purchased a vacation home in Los Angeles’ Venice Canal Historic District, the home was in desperate need of a makeover. The media room, in particular, felt pedestrian and outdated. The new owners wanted something more glamorous, as well as a space that would reflect their love of Asian art.

Since the TV is the main focus of any media room, finding an updated, elegant way to highlight it was the first step. The built-in media cabinet was replaced with a custom-designed shelving unit that gives the room a more modern, Asian-inspired feel.

In addition to lengthening the room, this updated unit also adds architectural interest to the space. The blond maple veneer keeps the room from feeling too cavernous and also works in harmony with the lighter wood floors.

Because it is used primarily as a screening space, this media room was really calling out for dark tones. After the walls were coated with a rich chocolate paint, the room felt instantly sophisticated and much more glamorous.corner detail after

Wall-to-wall chocolate drapery with blackout lining was used to cover the one window in the room that receives direct light. In addition to blocking the glare that came from the small window in the center of the wall, the drapery also adds some acoustic value to the space, which is key in any media room.

To keep the space from feeling too dark, white and metallic accents were added to the mix. Ample, comfortable seating is essential in a media room. A custom-designed, two-toned sectional from The Sofa Co. provides plenty of seating without stealing too much space.

Two armchairs, upholstered in a deep orange, provide additional seating and introduce a vibrant accent color that balances the space’s darker tones.

Now the room is ready to screen the latest Hollywood hit.
